Why PHI does it: Despite his mediocre vitals, Mendana has gotten results with Cleveland. Philly has some inconsistent RPs and taking a chance on Mendana continuing his performance is worth it. They also have Coomes ready and will platoon with at Brooke catcher, so Rose isn't really needed. Rose is a decent bat vs RHP, but is awful in the field. Plus with him set to enter FA after the season, he wouldn't be re-signed. Findlay is simply injury insurance.
Why CLE does it: Mendana doesn't benefit a rebuilding squad. I hate Rose's defense, but I plan on re-signing Gilpin once he hits 5.000 service, so I do not want his asking price to skyrocket with increased playing time.
It boils down to a half-year rental to get a cheaper price on a current player for a RP pitching better than some of the other team's current staff.
