In lieu of what's happened tonight, it's made me see that we have no concrete plan of action of what to do if a team fails to get their re-signings turned in. I believe in the past we've simply released any player up for a new contract if someone didn't turn in re-signings. For that fact that something unexpected could have came up or the possibility that the team may be opened up, I don't think this is the right course of action. Here's what I feel should happen...
If you fail to turn in re-signings you are subject, but not limited to:
1. Any player up for Free Agency will be released.
2. Any player up for Arbitration will be extended at their asking price.
3. Any player up for the 1.33 Arbitration rule will be extended for a 1.5x price of their last arbitration contract.
4. You will not be able to freely release any Arbitration players that you did not want to release.
5. Teams may be fined in the form of cash and/or draft picks.
This does not decimate a team by losing all of their contract eligible players. It does however ensure that any Free Agent eligible player is let go. They're also penalized by being force to retain Arbitration eligible players they may not want (also the extra price for retaining players for a 6th year of arbitration). If teams are repeat offers or possibly aren't penalized much by not turning in their re-signings they're subject to cash/draft pick reductions.
